Editor/IDE dilemma

Hello guys, I’m having a big problem deciding which editor to use. Here is what I’ve got so far.

What is important to me is a good and stable Remote folders function/FTP.
Also syntax checking is important.

Aptana: Great looking and nice features, however the FTP is very unstable to me.

Zend Studio for Eclipse: Nice features and good syntax checking, but there is no drag and dropping of the text, and it seems to be heavy with freezes for like 30 seconds from time to time.

E-editor: This is very nice, but the problem is the FTP features are not very good, however stable. Also there is no automatic syntax checking. I have to manually do it everytime.

PHP-Desinger: Good program, but if you use the FTP feature it’s a complete disaster. Many crashes and makes some sort of witespace on uploading.

I don’t need anything very fancy, but solid and working.

Discuss what you use and what you think i should use.

This question comes up every week.

That said, I’m on a mac (Textmate), so I won’t be of much help here.

PHPclipse has served me well, with several plugins for JS, CSS and such. And to solve the lack of FTP features in eclipse, I have set up my workspace so that my folder navigation is on the right, my editor is slightly minimized, and off to the right I have Filezilla open, showing only remote files. So I can just drag and drop from Eclipse into Filezilla.

I’ve used Aptana for FTP. For some reason it worked fine so far. However there are bugs, I noticed one when the css editor in aptana just crashed.. on another computer that editor works just fine…

Other then aptana I’ve used Dreamweaver. Great editor for web-design (I’m not talking here about the design view feature). On dreamweaver the FTP seamed slower then Aptana so I don’t use it that much at this point.

I have used Eclipse since 2002 (I am a Java developer) and I am really addicted to it! for me there’s no other choice on Win, Linux, Mac or whatever. wink

I definitely beg to differ.  Eclipse on a Mac is horrendous and incredibly slow.  I prefer Textmate, or if you want some a bit more graphical, Coda is pretty awesome.

Are you saying java is slower on the Mac?? Or do you need to upgrade?

@Wokioo—I’ll likely get flamed for mentioned a product that isn’t .... OMG .... FREE, but NuSphere’s PhpEd is so mething you should download and run through the trial.  http://www.nusphere.com

IMHO it is by far the finest fully capable PHP IDE on the market.  But quality requires cash.

I’ve been down that road!  PhpED is the best for Windows.  It’s far from perfect, but it’s the best out there i think.  Coda Panic is the best ever, but it’s only for mac
