I wonder why I never see anybody mentioning Zend Studio around here.  I’ve used it for years and absolutely love it.  Is it because it’s “costly”?

it is lovely, I have worked with it for a while, however it is really not worth the money.

Never to worry, all the wrong doers got it coming back to em
A thousand times over
Every dog has its day and everything flips around
Even the most greatest nation in the world has it coming back to em
Everyone reaps what they sew that’s how it goes
Innocent lives will be taken, it may get worse but we’ll get through it
You all be strong

Zend Studio is really expensive - and I don’t find it useful when using CI… most of the “magic” get lost.

Eclipse/PDT will just cut it, I’ve tried EasyEclipse for PHP with CI and it’s really awesome (Even AutoComplete is working!)

Aptana looks also good, not tested yet

If you’re already using Dreamweaver for xhtml/css/javascript/etc why wouldn’t you use it for PHP coding as well.  It supports PHP syntax highlighting, code collapsing, integrated FTP… is there something I’m missing here?

There is no:
- Code Completion
- Framework Integration
- Default PHP debugger
- It does not spot faults before u test the file in WAMP or LAMP

I’m a very cheap guy who doesn’t like bloat and strives for efficiency (that’s why I’m here using CodeIgniter. =P), and I only use editors based off of Scintilla, the open-source code-editing component (which supports a tonne of languages including C, Java, JavaScript, PHP, HTML, CSS, Python, Perl and Pascal).

Geany has become my personal favourite, as I run it on all versions of Windows I currently use, and on my Kubuntu computers and virtual machines. A list of it’s features are:

-Auto-complete
-Multiple document support
-Project support
-Syntax highlighting
-Code folding
-Symbol lists

There are also auto-save, file browser, HTML characters and versioning plugins. Once again, extremely light weight IDE (especially in comparison to Eclipse or some of the other giant wooly mammoths).

The part timers, dabblers, and folks building family web sites can ignore this one.

Like Developer13, I cannot believe any serious PHP developers have not at least mentioned the NuSphere products.  But like any product that costs money…it costs money. It is very, very high quality that doesn’t suffer from the problems post above, has top notch customer support, oh, never mind…it costs money.

Check out NuSphere’s PhpEd.

I’ve been having the same realization about Dreamweaver… I only use code view. Yesturday I kinda snapped out of it and wondered “What is all this other junk?” and “Why would I ever use that?”.... After reading through the first page of this thread, I’ve discovered several promising apps and I think I’m already sold on E TextEditor… the things shown in the screencast almost made me cry… I’ve been wasting so much time! I love all of Adobe’s products but why can’t they have such great features as a $30 program?!

ps…

a bit of an offtop: why are you even considering smartftp? filezilla > all hands down, been using it for years.

Maybe it’s time to move on. SmartFTP is by far the superior of the two FTP clients.  wink
