Should I embark on such a thing

this is the programming objective to manipulate the DOM with Javascript while dynamically updating the page with fresh content from user input

the test will pose a question get an answer show another question and tally the time it took all with one page request.

make a progress bar on the bottom of the test.

alternate colouring with javascript and use the onkeypress event handler to allow the user to controll the quiz by letting press either a b or c from the keybord and have the test cycle to the next question with onchange event handler call a ajax method to update the test

this test must be created with php codeigneter and ajax and javascript

this might be helpful first you will learn about CI and it’s framework and also you with see the effectiveness of web 2.0 methodologies put into practice

Is this a worth while endeavour? I want to do it but am I being insane I could do it in a rainy days time.

It would be nice to see a tutorial how to build something like that because of two reasons

- ajax code backed by php (allow/validate submissions when javascript is disabeled/not present)
- abstracted controller code (use the same code for ajax and php only submissions)

I don’t see anything in your description that isn’t possible in php only so it should be possible.
