I agree.  There have been some efforts to do this.  Have you searched around and found anything close to what you want?  We could always modify from there.

I’ve developed a form generation library extending the Validation class.
You can download that from the wiki and only keep the MY_Validation for that purpose.

Anyone know of a javascript validation class that works with Smarty? (an extension to the form commands within Smarty that is). I haven’t touched the CI form helpers, but I’m wondering if I should just try setting up Smarty helpers that hook up to those, hmm…
