Heres a question for you all, I’d be interested to see your answers.

Q:
What percentage of the overall work involved in building an average 6-8 page website do each of the following have:

  1. Concept Design in Photoshop
  2. Taking .psd and turning it into a website that the customer is happy with.

30/70? 50/50? 60/40? I’d be real interested to how you guys answer this.

I’ll tell you why later, but you’ve probably guessed I’m having an office debate here…

If you can afford not to worry about Internet Explorer, you’re a lucky man. CSS layout construction time will be significantly less. That’s definitely my experience.

Furthermore, concept and construction are not always two clearly separated design phases. I mix them up. After I created a header and navigation in Photoshop I often slice these parts and jump right to my text editor. Conversion to HTML and CSS goes fast (don’t worry about IE yet), especially handy for navigation. You can avoid a lot of repetitive work in Photoshop. Also tweaking fonts, margin, padding and other styles is easier.

Note: last poll option should be “80% Concept 20% Production” instead of the other way round

You know what’s funny?  On personal sites, because I have a pretty clear idea of what I want, I’m closer to 40/60, but even that goes really fast.  But when I’m working for other people, its easily closer to 80/20
