Hello CI comm,
I made a new template for a website and i would like your comments.
I didn’t like hacking around, so i choose tables as wel as div’s. Some parts
in tables and some parts div’s. This will be our first website build with CI.
(Next to the static-HTML there’ll be a client-login (downloads), news-page
with admin, and a price-list-(members-only-)app).

When finished i’ll try to put our framework online. The idea is that there is a
basic website with the (mentioned) controllers, and that the customer can build his
own HTML pages in dreamwii’ or goli’ (the read more stuff-pages…) this was a showstopper
for building a full-fledged CMS (they wanted source-editting, for the xtra-HTML-pages).
Prob-ly gonna build a controller that’ll include HTML pages (or a 404 for that matter) (file_exists(html))
and/or include it via a view… Take a peek ... [edit:link offline until finished]

regards, GDmac

Tables are for tabular data. Once you go the route of getting to grips with semantic markup and CSS layout, you’ll honestly never ever look back. Your layout is basic and it’s no problem to lay it out properly in a modern way. It’s so much easier to work with.

I’d also look into the relationship between the main menu and sub menu. They need to visually and spatially connect in order to best maintain the navigation links. Again, there are plenty of examples on the web using unordered lists and CSS to make fantastic main/sub navigation systems.

I’d start by deleting all trs and tds, however…

Crimp’s right. There’s nothing in your mock-up that should use a table.

I think it looks nice…and only you (and CSS nazis…present posters excepted!) will know how you did it.

I have nothing against tables if it saves you time.  I usually try to use CSS first and if I can’t get it to do what I want I resort to tables.

Thanks for your replies, i see your point crimp, but like Beanl i sometimes get stuck on margins and paddings not working on inline stuff and resort to tables for time sake…

To save some time, pick any of these ready-made layouts. 42 to choose from. Several will fit the header/content/sidebar/footer mold.

That’s a great resource Crimp.  I saw that on digg a while back and have used them several times.  I recommend them to anyone as well…they provide a good jumping-off point for layouts.
