Hmmm dont remember, first PC was a 486. But long before that we had a Commodore 64. Aaah those were the times:

I wanna play game X:
Step 1 - Pick tape on which this game is located
Step 2 - Make sure tape is fully rewound
Step 3 - Look at extensive list on what location on this tape game X can be found (3 digit number)
Step 4 - FFW your tapethingy to location found in step 4
Step 5 - Do a

run

command (not rly sure what command it was)
Step 6 - Press play on the tapethingy
Step 7 - Pray
Step 8 - Play

Appears I’m younger than everyone else :p.

All I remember is 32Mb ram…

Then like 6-7 years later 512 RAM 1.6GHZ…

I had the TRS-80!!!

1K , yes a whole 1024 bytes of ram.

Tape load at 120 baud (thats 120 bytes per mintue, as opposed to your first modem which was 14,000 or your current broadband which is more like 500,000 - 4,000,000)

black and white screen.

No sound.

Actually that last bit is not true.  I had a ‘dancing devil’ program.  If you put a transitor radio tuned to a specific SW frequency, then someone worked out how to route power through the motherboard to create music with the interference.

Amiga 500
then Amiga 1200
then Amiga 4000

The worst thing that can happen to you, is to be used to a machine 10 years ahed to the rest and then you have to leave it because Commodore backrupts.

Lucky that I left Amiga when windows 95 was out, I couldn’t stand DOS+Win3.11.

C64, cassette drive, b&w tv.  I didn’t have a printer but that didn’t stop me from word processing.  I once typed a paper on the C64, then typed it on a real typewriter from the screen.  It actually was sort of productive with the editing capability (see how I rationalize that stupidity even today?).

I soon replaced it with an IBM PCjr, floppy drive, Color monitor.  Modded the PCjr with 640K of RAM to run the full-blown versions of Lotus 1-2-3, dBase III, and Wordperfect 4.x.  My lifeline was my Compuserve account accessed with the 300 baud modem.  Fast enough since most software was only 10 to 100K in size back then.

I don’t miss cassette storage.
