Use a different image library. I had the same issue and using ImageMagick as a library gave the best results. This is GD I think, GD2 is slightly bettter was my impression but ImageMagick was perfect. I haven’t tried NETBPM but I would expect the thumbs to be better than GD.

When using ImageMagick don’t forget to say where it is installed, see CI manual for more info.

I’ve been working on an eshop for a while, with product image uploads, and I noticed this same effect when using GD. So I did some tests, and this is what I came up with:

GD is horrible, GD2 is better, and ImageMagick is the best. I haven’t tested NETBPM (not available on any of the servers I have access to). Also, using ImageMagick should result in lower load on the apache/php process than using GD/GD2. ImageMagick does result in slightly larger images than GD/GD2 though (not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing, just something that I noticed.)

Thanks to both, I solved using GD2 instead of GD.
