1.5.0 is slow

1.5.0 seems to be quite a bit slower than 1.4.1

Running the same app on the same server gives me the following benchmarks

Version           Action 1       Action 2
1.4.1             0.1455         0.1034

1.5.0             0.6190         0.4596

1.5.0 is still pretty fast compared to other things I’ve used, but that seems to be quite a drop in speed.

In my tests, both on the OS X box that I use for development, and on our various Linux servers, I’m not benchmarking a difference.  Check this out:

Here are two identically configured intallations.  A 1.5.0 version and a 1.4.1 version.  Both of them load seven different libraries and 5 helpers.  The load times are so close that it’s impossible to deterine a clear winner:

Version 1.5.0

Version 1.4.1

I’m on dreamhost and I’ve also noticed a drop in performance since going to 1.5 but on my windows lamp stack it flies. Weird…

I use the active record functions in the majority of my models to build my queries. Would this significantly decrease performance?

I think it has something to do with database calls. I’ll look into my code today and see what I can find.

Rick,

I just realized that I had the log_threshold set to 4. Setting it back to 0 speeds everything up.

Sorry to bother you with a stupid mistake.

I think this ‘mistake’ might be more common than you think.. I encountered exactly the same issue when developing an app using CI 1.3.3 wink The problem only reared it’s ugly head when the log file got big though.. took about half a day to realise what was happening.. Maybe a note should be made in the manual warning about large logs versus speed if it isn’t already there? smile

Paul Jones has an interesting post on his blog about the relative speed of different PHP frameworks.  Unfortunately, CI is not among those tested.

CI is so lightweight, I don’t think it can get any faster.
Even the templating is just right for me.

It also depends on how the DB queries are made. Size is not the only matter…
