The specs sounds like you want to build a CMS from scratch instead of using existing solutions. Are there any reasons why you chose CodeIgniter over a CMS such as Drupal?

I second the above comment - Just out of curiosity, why not use an existing cms? Drupal is rock solid and on top of functionality which will be hard to implement with CI, you can count on an experienced and helpful community to support your project.

That is, unless your project is to build a cms from scratch.

I hear good things about Expressionengine, indeed> and there are plenty of more than decent ones out there.
not trying to favor one cms over the other, by any means.

But question remains - why build your own when the offer is so large and of good quality?

I’d like to think that coming-up with the best solution for projects/problems doesn’t necessarily have to include programming everything from scratch. Why repeat the same solutions/mistake of others when existing solutions are already out there that have been tried and tested by a huge community? Simply put, starting from scratch when you don’t have to is simply a waste of time and other valuable resources. You could’ve built several useful products already instead of doing repetitive tasks.

Just to offer another perspective, I have wasted more time trying to make third-party solutions work for clients than I care to admit. Often, the workflow has nothing to do with how the content editors think of their product, services or content, and the customization required starts to become more of a burden.

But I do believe there are ways of getting around hand-coding forms that just amount to data entry screens for a database. Believe it or not, Codecharge Studio is a fantastic product that allows you to rapidly produce such forms that are especially suitable for CMS. You end up with forms that already have validation, lovely date-pickers and pro-looking designs. Then I use CodeIgniter to write the front-end, of course. wink

I am doing one such overhaul of a site that was done with Mmabo/Joomla. The client found the provided admin very confusing, she has to weed through a thousand feature she never uses just to enter articles one per month. Now I’ve created an admin that does everything she needed to accomplish with only five admin pages…

Similarly, I recently re-coded a ZenCart site in CI as a custom shopping cart, as the ZenCart templates were becoming burdensome to edit - they take into account dozens of possible conditions and components, when the client only needed a few…

Sounds like this could be built way faster by creating a couple of modules for ExpressionEngine. To build it from scratch you’ll have to invest tousands of dollars - but sure, you’ll get it exactly as you want then so I guess if that’s your thing that’s your thing wink
