OK, so I got a MOSSO web hosting account on a free trial ... and I’m loving it so far

note - I have no sites in production mode yet, just dev.

OK, so after getting a VPS hosting through Spry ... I quickly realized how much VPS’s don’t work for me. Mostly because I’m busy designing and developing and don’t want to be a server admin more than I need to, secondly because unless you get a VPS with proper memory ... resources can be a fight ... Spam Assassin is really causing me grief ... the server (with little volume) often is found with slow and laggish. I’m not sold on a budget VPS for a production sites.

So after talking with Will at Mosso a few times, I decided to give it a try. All I can say is developing on this server has been a breeze ... I love the dev URLS ... works perfect with CI, and with the options to have clients get support directly from Mosso for a few bucks extra a month ... I must say ... I can’t wait to get some sites on there and do a proper test before moving my clients over. For $120 a month ($20 in case you need unlimited sites on ssl), the peace of mind and the saved time not wasted on WHM/Cpanel seems like a no-brainer. I was paying $60 a month with Spry and spending too much time in frustration with it.

The default setup just seems to be perfect ... right out of the gate and the interface is uncluttered and to the point.

I’m 75% certain I’ll waiving good bye to cPanel forever!

Anyone else here using Mosso? I heard a few people talk about how bad Mosso was in the past ... is the system I’m on new? Am I missing something?

I recall complaints about the overall performance of Mosso in the past, but I have no direct experience. I’m a fan and frequent user of Slicehost (now under RackSpace), but to-date, it’s not for those looking wanting a CPanel interface, unless you install it yourself.

We use a 256MB slicehost account for dev work and it seems to be out-performing our live EC2 server. I personally want to move away from my personal 1and1 and dreamhost shared accounts to a VPS and I really love the way Mosso / Slicehost are handling things. The slicehost site has so many helpful manuals for server admin newbies like me.

I’ve been with them for about 4 months now and don’t have one single complaint. I’m running about 13 separate domains, some with IIS, some with Linux. Their knowledge base site is extremely thorough. For approx. $100/month, you can’t beat it. Since they’re VMs, it’s way easier to support me. They take hourly snapshots, so if I want to get an old file, I just go to /directory1/directory2/.snapshot/. The .snapshot directory has subfolders 1-23 for each hour. Pretty cool.

Why is this better than eg. mediatemple which offers grid space for 20$ a month? From quickly looking at mosso i see that they don’t give you ssh access (which you get at mediatemple) and at mediatemple you get unlimited domains and twice the hard disk space and bandwidth.

Mosso seems to have a bit snappier support (chat compared to email)...

First off, the $20/month option with Mediatemple only hosts up to 100 domains. It also only comes with 100GB of space. Rackspace gives you 500. Also, I’m pretty sure Rackspace doesn’t limit the number of emails like MT does (1000). The biggest difference is as the owner of a web design company, I can also offer hosting [bold]without[/bold] using my web design services as Rackspace allows reselling. I have about 20 clients that are simply being hosted by me. Rackspace’s admin panel even allows client billing and setting up different packages for clients to limit their settings eg. 250MB, 5 email accounts, and 1 database. They get separate logins, ftps, etc. It’s pretty cool man.

I definitely wouldn’t suggest it if you only have a few domains like I did at first. But once I got way more clients, the $100/mo doesn’t hurt as bad.

According to http://www.rackspacecloud.com/cloud_hosting_products/sites/pricing, rackspace gives you 50GB of space and 500GB of bandwidth.

Mediatemple has a ‘dedicated virtual’ server option which is good for reselling and includes the Plesk administration panel for both you (admin) and your customers (clients). This server option is $50/month so it’s a bit pricier than the grid server…

Anyways, I was just curious about what Rackspace had to offer that I don’t get at mediatemple. I’m glad you are happy with Rackspace… smile

I am thinking about starting a reselling business but I haven’t really had to much time to look into it.  So I checked out rackspace after I read this thread and wow was I impressed.  I started a chat with this guy names Mike and right off the bat he knew that I was new to this and gave me his direct phone number!  No where else other than a smaller web company called eVerity have I ever seen that kind of support!

Regardless if i do start reselling, I guarantee that I will be using rackspace.
