Hey guys,

I was wondering: what program do you use to write your php code? Because I’m having trouble finding a program to my liking.

At the moment I mostly use Dreamweaver for xHTML and CSS because of the easy auto complete functions (Yes, I’m that lazy). All my projects in development are also online, seeing as I work from several spaces and don’t have a laptop. That’s were dreamweaver also comes in handy: I can easily create a new file online or edit online files easily without having to worry I’ll overwrite any page with an older cached one.

But Dreamweaver doesn’t have the functionality I need when writing PHP (like matching bracket highlighting etc). Also, using Dreamweaver seems a little overkill to me, seeing as I only use the code view and don’t need all of the fancy insert commands.

So that’s why I’m using Notepad++ at the moment for php editting. It’s lightweight and has great syntax highlighting (once editted a little by myself). But the ftp support is horrible. Eg: you can’t create a new file online or save a file to the server, you first have to save it on your hard disk and then upload it to your webdirectory.

I’ve tried Php designer 2008, but the autocompletion code and error handling are so annoying I immediatly uninstalled it.

So now I was wondering: which program do you guys use?

Hello guys, I’m having a big problem deciding which editor to use. Here is what I’ve got so far.

What is important to me is a good and stable Remote folders function/FTP.
Also syntax checking is important.

Aptana: Great looking and nice features, however the FTP is very unstable to me.

Zend Studio for Eclipse: Nice features and good syntax checking, but there is no drag and dropping of the text, and it seems to be heavy with freezes for like 30 seconds from time to time.

E-editor: This is very nice, but the problem is the FTP features are not very good, however stable. Also there is no automatic syntax checking. I have to manually do it everytime.

PHP-Desinger: Good program, but if you use the FTP feature it’s a complete disaster. Many crashes and makes some sort of witespace on uploading.

I don’t need anything very fancy, but solid and working.

Discuss what you use and what you think i should use.

I’m starting this thread on a Sidekick LX for a couple of reasons, not least of which is to test for Derek Jones.

My first voice+data phone was a Sidekick II, and it’s informed my selections in a phone ever since. Some are eager to dismiss the device as “kiddie”, but the QWERTY keyboard is best in class, the browser is solid, it has push email built in, and at $20/mo for unlimited (S/M)MS. No special servers or specific “Pro” OS required, and if you upgrade your handset, It’s a pretty compelling package.

Some of its advantages in one way are disadvantages in another. It is like running a “fat” client over the network, but I’ll discuss that more in part two. Right now, I want to get back to knocking off a few more feeds in Google Reader before I get off the bus and into work.

Hi,

I’m developing a website that allows certain individuals to be sellers and other individuals to be buyers of a product. Right now I am doing this by having the sellers enter their PayPal email address to accept payments, which limits my users to having to pay by PayPal as well.

PayPal accepts credit cards if you aren’t a member, but they don’t have a good solution for it at all. PayPal sets a cookie if you have ever logged in via the browser, so if a user is using a shared computer, where someone has previously logged in, they will never see the credit card processing information.

Are there other ways of setting up this scenario without having a middleman involved between the seller and buyer? Looks like Google Checkout requires you to be a user as well.

Thanks!

advance apologies for the shudders that an MS reference is likely to cause…

This is not a CI question, but the community rocks, so I’m hoping to tap experiences of others. I’d like to create outlook appointments from my CI app, but my initial searching has come up empty.

Why? My users need to have a series of reminders, and the specifics include enough frequency and business logic that a web app makes good sense. The existing functionality of Outlook, and the fact that all my users are on the same Exchange server, make it a very good fit if I can get the appointments created.

What’s needed? I can create a “phantom” exchange user. I’d want my app to send a meeting request to that user. That user can be set up to auto-accept appointments. The appointment will be simple - a description, a date (no time), a list of other attendees, and a reminder.

What’s my problem? I’m thinking/hoping that a correctly formatted email to the “phantom” user can accomplish my goal, but I can’t find documentation telling me how (or if it can’t be done that easily).

Any suggestions/pointers out there? (other than the obvious solution of repurposing the Exchange server as nautical ballast)

Forgive me for my rant ahead of time but I need to. This is my rant account This board and the CI community as a whole are an outstanding group of people who prove day in and day out that true genius is marked by patience and understanding.

[RANT]
I am totally frustrated with the number of hobbyists who come onto the board seeking magical help. They represent everything that is wrong with PHP scripting. It is really unfortunate that PHP is so easy to setup and use as nearly anyone with a fist to bang on a keyboard can get started in a heart beat. Every day I witness post after post from posters seeking magical help. The same that never think to do some research ahead of time. The same that think the User Guide is just not “user friendly” enough. I mean what was EllisLab thinking when they created a User Guide with no brain scanner that can parse your thoughts into code.

Its insane.
You know the type of person I am talking about.
The kind that grabbed a copy of xampp, installed it, downloaded a copy of CI and wondered where the msi was and then proceeded to post asking where the CI installer was located at so they could install it.

For F***s sake

Just today I read a post complaining about how hard ActiveRecord was to figure out because they are not familiar with SQL. Are you kidding me? Perhaps some research into SQL would help before using a basic form of SQL DB abstraction.

Don’t get me started on scaffolding. I bet EllisLab regrets the day they added that. Now we have people asking why scaffolding doesn’t make zebras into unicorns and other foolishness. Its scaffolding not the end all.

There are those that should be commended for their patience and diligence in helping the monkeys who just fell from the trees. You know who you are. People like Mr. Wales who have the patience of saints.
[/RANT]

Thanks for listening. If it pissed you off then you probably think the user guide needs a fairy dust sprayer.
